Appearing in ChatGPT means being cited as a source when the model answers a question with browsing enabled. The process depends on three layers: having your page indexed by the search engine that feeds the AI (Bing, in OpenAI's case), semantic clarity of the content, and brand authority outside your own site. Unlike classic SEO, the outcome is a mention inside the answer, with or without a link.

Your client has probably already asked ChatGPT which companies are the best in their segment. If the answer came back without their brand in it, the conversation about your SEO contract just changed.

This guide shows what to adjust on your site, off your site, and how to measure whether citations are actually happening.

What it means to appear in ChatGPT

Appearing in ChatGPT has two meanings that the market tends to mix up. One is publishing a custom GPT in OpenAI's store, which is a product matter. The other is being cited as a source when someone asks something in your niche, and that is the marketing game. This article covers the second one: getting the model to mention your brand, link your page, and use your content as the basis for its answer.

From searching for links to searching for answers

In classic Google, you compete for a spot in a list of ten links. In ChatGPT, the answer comes ready made, and your brand is either in it or invisible. Whoever clicks gets a summary with two or three cited sources, not a results page.

That changes the metric. Ranking alone stops being the point, and what matters is whether your content was chosen as raw material for the answer.

The three entry doors

There are three paths to a ChatGPT answer, each with a different degree of control.

The first is pre-trained knowledge. According to OpenAI itself, models learn from a snapshot of the web up to a cutoff date. Influencing that takes years of consistent presence, and you cannot move it in the short term.

The second is live browsing. When the question calls for recent information, ChatGPT queries a search index (today backed by Bing) and reads pages in real time. Here, classic SEO carries direct weight.

The third is the citation: your page becomes a linked source in the answer. It is the most influenceable door, and none of them can be bought. The rest of this article focuses on how to work the last two.

How ChatGPT decides what to cite

When a question requires current information, ChatGPT triggers a web search and builds the answer from its own index. According to OpenAI's documentation, what feeds that index is OAI-SearchBot, a crawler different from GPTBot, which collects data to train models.

That creates three distinct layers: being indexed, being retrieved for a specific question, and being cited in the final answer. Your site can pass the first and fail the other two. That is why ranking well on Google guarantees nothing here.

The role of OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt

Blocking OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt takes you out of ChatGPT's search. Blocking GPTBot prevents use in training but keeps citation possible. These are separate decisions, and plenty of people block everything without realizing the cost.

Why third-party mentions matter so much

The model prefers statements that appear across several independent sources. A brand mentioned in publications, reviews, and forums becomes statistical consensus, and consensus is what the AI treats as trustworthy.

The power of lists and comparisons

Ask ChatGPT which is the best tool in any category and look at the sources. They are almost always lists and comparisons from independent sites, rarely the manufacturer's own page. The ranking structure answers the question outright, and that makes extraction easier.

The step by step to being cited by ChatGPT

1. Allow OpenAI's crawlers and check access

Open your robots.txt and confirm there is no Disallow for OAI-SearchBot. If you want to be cited without handing over content for training, allow it and block only GPTBot. Common mistake: a firewall or CDN blocking the bot even with robots.txt open. Test with curl simulating the user-agent.

2. Structure the page to answer in a citable block

Each H2 should work as a question, and the first paragraph below it as a complete answer in up to 60 words. If the reader has to click tabs or accordions to see the text, the extractor probably cannot see it either.

3. Publish original data, numbers, and verifiable sources

Models prefer to cite whoever brings a checkable fact. A survey of 80 of your agency's clients is worth more than ten opinion posts. Always with a visible publication date and an identified author.

4. Build mentions outside your domain

The index evaluates the entire web. Show up in industry directories, transcribed podcasts, third-party rankings, and articles that mention your brand by its exact name.

5. Keep your entity consistent across site, profiles, and Wikidata

Identical name, description, and segment on your site, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, and, where applicable, Wikidata. Schema.org Organization markup helps tie it all together. Inconsistency here makes the model hesitate to state who you are.

How to measure whether you are showing up

There is no Search Console for ChatGPT. Measurement is hands on, but it works if you turn it into a routine.

Recurring prompt matrix

Build a spreadsheet with 15 to 30 questions your client would ask, varying intent: comparison, price, "which is the best," "how to do." Run all of them once a week, always in an incognito window or a clean account, because history personalizes the answer.

Log three columns: whether the brand was mentioned, whether the page was linked, and who showed up instead. Repeating the test on the same day and time reduces noise.

A single citation proves nothing. A trend over four to eight weeks proves it.

Referral traffic in your own data

In GA4, filter sessions with the source chatgpt.com. That is the real click from someone who saw your page cited and opened the link. Compare pages: the ones receiving visits from ChatGPT indicate which content the index is retrieving.

In your server logs, look for the OAI-SearchBot user-agent. Frequent hits show the page is being revisited, a good sign of relevance to the index.

What GEO tools can see

Tools like Profound and Otterly automate the prompt matrix at scale and show your citation share against competitors. The limitation: they simulate queries, they do not see what real users ask or the volume of those questions.

Treat their numbers as a sample, not a census.

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Gemini

Much of the work serves all four platforms at once, but each has its own data source. Knowing where the effort repeats and where it is specific avoids rework and helps you prioritize on a limited budget.

What is the same across all four and worth doing only once

A direct answer in the first paragraph of each H2, data with a source, identified authorship, a visible publication date, and a fast page. This package works in any AI answer system, because they all extract snippets of clear text. Mentions on third-party sites also count for all of them: a model that sees your brand cited in three different sources tends to treat it as a reference, regardless of which index it uses.

Where effort needs to be platform specific

AI Overviews and Gemini draw from Google's index. There, the classic SEO you already do is the path: ranking well remains a prerequisite. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot, so check that it is allowed in robots.txt, the same reasoning applied to OAI-SearchBot in the previous section.

To decide priority, look at the buying cycle. Businesses with quick decisions and local search gain more from AI Overviews, given Google's volume. Technical or B2B products with long research cycles show up more in ChatGPT and Perplexity, where users ask comparative questions. Run your prompt spreadsheet across all four and invest where competitors are not being cited yet.

Where to start this week

You got here because a client asked whether their brand shows up in ChatGPT and you had no answer. Now you have more than that: you have a method with steps you can audit, charge for, and repeat across any account in the agency.

Three things hold up everything we covered:

  1. AI citation is a technical discipline, not luck. OAI-SearchBot needs to access the page, and you verify that in robots.txt and the firewall, not by guesswork.
  2. The model cites whoever answers fast and with proof. A direct first paragraph, data with a source, an identified author, and a visible date are worth more than a thousand generic words.
  3. Without measurement there is no service. The weekly prompt spreadsheet turns GEO into a deliverable with a before and after, something clients pay to see.

Tomorrow's step is deliberately small: take one client, confirm OAI-SearchBot access with curl, rewrite the first paragraph of the most important page, and run five test prompts in an incognito window. Write down the result. In four weeks you will have a baseline that almost no Brazilian agency has today.

This entire process, from the mechanics of search to a project applied to your own site, is what Digo Garcia, André Mousinho, and Gabriel Raposo break down across the 8 modules of the program. Frequently asked questions

How do I get ChatGPT to cite my site?

Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, publish pages that answer the question right in the first paragraph, and back every claim with verifiable data, a date, and an identified author. Then build mentions outside your site in directories, profiles, and third-party content, because the model cross-checks sources before citing. Monitor with weekly test prompts to know whether the work is paying off.

What is the difference between GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot?

According to OpenAI's documentation, GPTBot collects content to train the models, while OAI-SearchBot feeds the search index ChatGPT uses when it needs current information. To appear as a cited source in answers, what matters is OAI-SearchBot. You can block GPTBot and keep OAI-SearchBot allowed, a common scenario for those who want citations without handing over content for training.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers?

There is no guaranteed timeline or official dashboard showing the queue. In practice, sites already indexed and with external mentions start appearing within weeks for niche questions, while brands with no presence beyond their own domain take months. The fastest route is usually optimizing pages that already rank well on Google, because they tend to enter the retrieval index sooner.

How do I know if ChatGPT is citing my brand?

Measurement is manual. Build a spreadsheet with 15 to 30 questions your client would ask, including comparisons and variations like "which is the best." Run all of them once a week in an incognito window, since account history personalizes the answer. Record whether your brand was mentioned, whether there was a link, and which page appeared. That time series shows progress and points to where to act.

Do I need to block AI bots on my site?

It depends on the goal. If the aim is to be cited in answers, blocking OAI-SearchBot eliminates that chance. The separate decision is about training: blocking GPTBot prevents your content from being used in future models without affecting citation in search. Also check your firewall and CDN, which sometimes block bots even with robots.txt open. Test with curl simulating the user-agent.

Does what works for ChatGPT also work for Perplexity and Gemini?

Largely, yes. A direct answer at the top of the page, data with a source, clear authorship, and accessible HTML that does not require interaction work across all four platforms, including AI Overviews. The difference is the data source: Gemini and AI Overviews draw from Google's index, Perplexity has its own crawler, and ChatGPT uses the OAI-SearchBot index. Each bot needs its own specific permission.

Is quality content enough to be cited by AI?

Quality is a necessary condition, but not sufficient. The model needs to be able to crawl the page, extract the snippet that answers the question, and trust the source. That involves technical indexability, H2 structure in question format, structured data, a visible date, and brand mentions on third-party sites. An excellent page that requires a click to reveal the text, or that lives on a domain with no external reputation, is rarely cited.
